After more than 2 decades of existence, mobile communication markets continue to break records year after year. For 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, we gathered 10 of the most amazing figures about mobile device markets, with a Slideshare presentation and some additional comments below.

#1- 189.000.000 smartphones sold in China in 2012 (1)
The growth of smartphones in China is impressive: +137%! Even though competition remains very strong, such a huge domestic market is a major asset for global Chinese players like ZTE, Huawei, TCL Communication or Lenovo.

#2- 200.000.000 cumulated iPad will have been sold by the end of 2013 (2)
I daresay I was impressed to realize that if the 2013 predictions from DisplaySearch on Apple tablet shipments eventually materialize, it would have taken iPad 18 month less than iPhone to reach this cumulative shipment performance.

#3- 240.000.000 tablet PC to be sold in 2013 (3)
Only 3 years after the launch of the first iPad, the tablet market will be more important than the notebook market, forecasted at 207 million units, beating the most optimistic predictions.

#4- 275.000.000 LTE smartphones will be sold in 2013 (4)
Those who (like me) are mobile veterans might remember how slow were the early years of 3G (WCDMA). As the market will triple this year, it seems that 4G (LTE) takes off much faster than the previous generation as a real demand for mobile broadband already exists.

#5- 295.000.000 Samsung smartphones to be sold this year (4)
The Korean giant is expected to sell 33% more smartphones this year. This is nearly 60% of the half a billion mobile phones targeted by the company for 2013.

#6- 810.000.000 = the market size of smartphones in 2013 (5)
This market will grow again by 24%, most probably with some important changes in the competitive landscape for both brands and operating systems.

#7- 1.000.000.000 cameras shipped in smartphones and tablets in 2012 (6)
This is nearly seven times more than the camera market itself. Count the number of cameras included in smart connected devices (see below) and do the maths: it is not going to stop!

#8- 1.194.000.000 smart connected devices sold in 2012 (7)

According to IDC’s definition, smart connected devices are the combination of smartphones, tablets and PC segments. Until 2016, this market is set to grow by 77%.

#9- > 1.700.000.000 mobile phones sold in 2012 (7)
This means 54 handsets sold every second.

#10- > 5.000.000.000 WiFi enabled devices sold so far (6)
This number is set to double by 2015. Smart, mobile, and connected devices are here to stay.
